Computed Tomography (CT) employs X-ray technology and computer processing to generate cross-sectional images of bones, organs, and blood vessels. These CT images serve as invaluable diagnostic tools for medical professionals, facilitating the identification of conditions and the formulation of appropriate treatment plans.

CT imaging possesses the capability to assess internal trauma, guide surgical procedures, and diagnose various medical conditions, including cancer and fractures.

A CT scan is characterized by its non-invasiveness and typically concludes within a few minutes. However, certain patients may necessitate the administration of an intravenous or oral contrast agent to enhance the clarity and accuracy of the resulting images.

On the day of your CT Examination

CT with Oral Contrast:

Specific instructions will be provided to you based on your scheduled examination type. However, general instructions are as follows:

If your examination includes oral contrast, refrain from consuming any oral substances other than water, six hours prior to your appointment.

Ensure adequate hydration.

We may request that you change into a gown for the examination.

Please remove all metallic objects, including jewelry, eyeglasses, dentures, hairpins, and similar items.

The technologist will conduct the CT scan from a control room. You are welcome to communicate with the technologist throughout the examination.

You will lie still on a table as it moves through the scanner. We may ask you to hold your breath for a few seconds during the examination.

CT examinations do involve radiation exposure. Following your examination, it is imperative that you consume ample water to facilitate the elimination of the contrast from your body.

CT with IV Contrast

If you answer in the affirmative to any of the following questions, you will require a blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine test result (valid for a period of 30 days) that is utilized to assess renal function. If you do not possess a valid BUN and creatinine result, it can be obtained at our facility prior to your appointment.

If you are over the age of 60, have diabetes, are taking metformin or glucophage, have a history of renal (kidney) disease, or have experienced an allergic reaction to intravenous (IV) contrast, please contact the office immediately to discuss available options.

If your examination involves IV or oral contrast, refrain from consuming any oral substances other than water, six hours prior to your appointment.

Ensure adequate hydration.

During your computed tomography (CT) scan, you will be positioned on a cushioned examination table that moves into the scanner. It is crucial to remain still and relaxed throughout the procedure, as any movement could potentially distort the acquired image.

In certain studies, you may be requested to hold your breath for a duration of up to 20 seconds.

Throughout the examination, which is usually brief, ranging from a few minutes to several minutes depending on the specific tests ordered by your physician, you will have the opportunity to communicate with your technologist.
